About Us

Sustainable Living for Healthy Humans and a Healthy Planet

Our Story

Living on the West Coast I've had my fair share of being glued to the news, waiting to see if I would be forced to flee my home to avoid the latest forest fire. It always felt surreal; I felt helpless. Each time, I was one of the fortunate ones whose home was spared. There was a sense of relief accompanied by guilt. I wanted to do something but it seemed beyond me.

The latest forest fire started just over a mile from my house. This time, though, I had two small children. I didn't want them to be scared, so I went calmly room to room, packing up our essential items. I made sure our dogs were inside, so I could wrangle them up as fast as possible. And I waited, constantly refreshing the emergency alert website. Waiting to see if my zone would move onto the evacuation list.

We were lucky. The fire was contained before it got to our home. And then it was officially out. But I didn't unpack that day, or that week, or even that month. I kept waiting for the next fire to happen, to need to be ready to flee at a moment's notice. And I realized that there had to be something I could do. Something that would make a difference for the planet. But I didn't know what, until shortly after when I needed to find hair conditioner for my three-year-old. I wanted something all natural, without any harsh chemicals, something that didn't smell because she can't stand things that have a scent. Looking around at our other hair products, I realized we were surrounded by plastic. Plastic shampoo bottles, body wash, toothpaste, dental floss, toothbrushes. Then I wondered: what were the contents made of?

And so the mission was born: to leverage my education in environmental health sciences and passion for research to find the best products for my family and the planet. But I didn't want to just keep it to my family. I wanted to share what I learned with others. The realms of public health and planet health, though, can be very depressing and overwhelming. I enjoy documentaries yet I'm always left feeling saddened. But then, one night, watching one of my husband's and my favorite comedy shows, it hit me. Bringing light to sustainable living didn't have to be depressing. It could be funny and engaging. It was in this spirit that Bob and Gary were created.
